Ajay Dhawan

Ajay Dhawan, MD was appointed as the Interim Director of the Atlanta VA Medical Center effective October 18, 2018. In this capacity, he is responsible for one of VA’s largest integrated health care systems. With 466 inpatient beds, including a 120-bed Community Living Center, a 40-bed domiciliary, and a 21-bed Residential Treatment Program, the Atlanta VA Medical Center serves the healthcare needs of more than 130,000 enrolled Veterans living in 50 counties across northeast Georgia.

Prior to his appointment as the Interim Director, Dr. Dhawan served as Chief Medical Officer for the VA Southeast Network (VISN 7), a position he has held since 2015. As the Chief Medical Officer, he provides oversight for clinical care and healthcare delivery operations for 8 VA Medical Centers across Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. He has also held other clinical leadership positions within the VA, including the Chief of Staff at the VA Northern Indiana Healthcare System (Fort Wayne, Indiana), Associate Chief of Staff at the Bay Pines VA Medical Center (Bay Pines, Florida), and Chief Medical Officer for the VA Outpatient Clinic in Toledo, Ohio. Dr. Dhawan has been chosen to participate in emerging initiatives at both the regional and national levels.

Dr. Dhawan also brings private sector experience to the Atlanta VA Medical Center, having served as Vice President of Medical Affairs at Culberson Memorial Hospital in Rushville, Illinois, and as a surveyor for The Joint Commission.

Dr. Dhawan is Board Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine with a further specialization in Clinical Informatics and is currently licensed to practice medicine in the states of Michigan and Florida. Dr. Dhawan is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and a Fellow of the American Institute of Healthcare Quality. Throughout his career, Dr. Dhawan has been recognized as a passionate and selfless leader concerned with the health and welfare of Veterans and their families.
